Leipzig
Thanks to its rich heritage as the birthplace and workplace of many important composers, classical music is deeply rooted in Leipzig. Last but not least, the proud citizenship of the prosperous trade fair and trading city also contributed to this: The opera - at that time still located in a building on Am Brühl - looks back on a history of over 300 years and is thus considered one of the oldest bourgeois musical theatre stages. The “Great Musical Concerts” in the Gewandhaus, founded in 1743, are still an integral part of every concert season of the orchestra of the same name, which performs in the New Gewandhaus - incidentally the only new concert hall built in the era of the former GDR - as well as in the Opera House and St Thomas’ Church.
And so you can still follow in the footsteps of Bach, Mendelssohn-Bartholdy, Mahler, Wagner or the Schumann couple in Leipzig today.
